Listen To “Overflowing” / Watch Behind-the-Scenes Footage From Album Recording Session
Tour Continues With Central Park SummerStage July 20
July 13, 2022 -- Fast-rising Southern California upstarts Thee Sacred Souls have shared “Overflowing,” a new preview of their self-titled debut album out August 26 on Daptone Records. “Overflowing” features feather-light, show-stopping falsetto from frontman Josh Lane and captures that first lightning strike of unrequited love. The band basks in a pristine mid-tempo groove on this new cut, another exciting addition to a young catalog of timeless songs that aim straight for the heart with grit and class in equal measure.

They’ve also shared this behind-the-scenes video from their “Overflowing” recording session with Daptone co-founder Gabe Roth at his Riverside, CA studio while making their debut album. Roth attended Thee Sacred Souls’ very first club performance in 2019; the tape was rolling just three days later. The ensemble was formed earlier that year by drummer/songwriter Alex Garcia and bassist/songwriter Sal Samano when they were 23 years old. The duo bonded over their similar experiences growing up in southern California and a mutual affinity for record collecting. Garcia and Samano found inspiration in the lowrider scene of Chula Vista and Imperial Beach, and their growing collection of crate dug records proved to be an ideal match. All they needed was a singer. Enter singer/songwriter Josh Lane who brought his love for soul titans like Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson to the fold, with show-stopping vocals that he honed while studying classical voice in college, singing arias and Italian opera.
The accolades and highlights are coming in fast and furious for a band that’s just recently burst onto the scene; co-signs ranging from Alicia Keys, Princess Nokia, Black Pumas, Timbaland, Gary Clark, Jr. and sampled by Curren$y, 40 million streams globally for just a handful of singles released, standing ovations and encore demands from the Beacon to the Greek and sold-out headlining shows with little advance promotion. NPR Music’s NowPlaying featured “Easier Said Than Done” just after the album announcement was made in June.
Hints of Chicano, Philly, Chicago, Detroit, and even Panama soul weave together on the gripping debut from this ensemble and while it’s a deliberately analog collection, it’s also distinctly modern. The band, which tours as a 7-piece including guitar, keyboards and two backing vocalists, recently finished a run with Belle and Sebastian, were on the road earlier this year with St. Paul & The Broken Bones and will join Cory Henry at Central Park SummerStage on July 20.
