Today, Van William releases the latest single from his forthcoming debut album 'Countries' (1/19, Fantasy) entitled "Before I Found You." The album opener is an outlier in a song cycle that deals mostly with heartache. "Before I Found You" heralds the euphoric beginning of a new relationship, a thematic contrast prefacing the diary of an end of a six-year relationship. "Even though this record is at its core a break-up record, I wanted the first song to establish what was being lost," says Van. "That initial spark and flame is the most powerful drug in the history of the planet, and like most drugs - it's hard not to chase the first buzz. Even if you don't feel particularly lost, that shit can make you feel found."
"Before I Found You" follows the success of another 'Countries' highlight "Revolution" (Feat. First Aid Kit), which broke top 10 at Triple A Radio this week. Van will celebrate the release of 'Countries' with a residency series at Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles on January 8th, 15th and 22nd that will feature different secret special guests each night.
'Countries' was recorded in a secluded part of the Sierra Nevada and was co-produced by Van and Brian Phillips, and features contributions from Dawes drummer Griffin Goldsmith, POP ETC bassist Chris Chu and keyboardist Tam Visher. The album is Van's first as a solo artist after years leading his bands Port O'Brien and Waters, and the songs came to light in the midst of a period of life changes for Van that included the most important break-up of his life and his father's retirement from 49 years of commercial salmon fishing in Alaska.
'Countries' follows Van's critically acclaimed 'The Revolution EP,' released in September, which earned praise from NPR, The Wild Honey Pie ("therapeutic and celebratory") and others. The EP's title track and video both feature Van's longtime friends and collaborators First Aid Kit, who he's set to support on an international tour starting January 26. Before that Van will play a three-week residency at LA's Moroccan Lounge, with special guests to be announced day-of-show each week. See below for a full list of upcoming Van William dates.
