Today, Wayne Shorter, Terri Lyne Carrington, esperanza spalding, and Leo Genovese share a second preview of the concert album Live At The Detroit Jazz Festival (to be released Sept 9): “Midnight In Carlotta’s Hair.” Punctuated by haunting vocals from spalding, this performance of Shorter’s “Midnight In Carlotta’s Hair” is a true demonstration of Shorter’s legacy as arguably the greatest living jazz composer.

The full recording captures this multi-generational super group’s one time only, magnificent concert from the 2017 edition of the festival — and one of Wayne Shorter's last concerts before his retirement from live performance. Featuring today’s evocative “Midnight In Carlotta’s Hair,” Geri Allen’s “Drummer’s Song,” the Shorter and spalding composition “Endangered Species” (a landmark of mood-shifting free-form exploration), and more, the album captures not only an unforgettable performance, but four lifetimes in music.
In a testament to the level of trust and respect shared between these great artists, Shorter, Carrington, Genovese and spalding had a mere outline of how the music might evolve when they took the stage, choosing instead to leave space for spontaneous expression — resulting in unprecedented sonic textures, exquisite improvisation, and assured interplay between four leaders of the modern jazz world.
This performance is dedicated to the memory of pianist and composer Geri Allen, who was originally to be a part of the group, but passed away in June of 2017. The recording will be released on high quality vinyl and all digital formats.

Live At The Detroit Jazz Festival will be released September 9 on the recently revived Candid Records label. For Terri Lyne Carrington, Live At The Detroit Jazz Festival is the first of a number of new projects from the interdisciplinary artist, activist and educator. One week after Live At The Detroit Jazz Festival’s release, Candid Records and Carrington will release new STANDARDS - vol 1, 11 selections of recordings from the New Standards lead sheets book — Carrington’s ambitious new endeavor that was created to shine a light on women composers in historic new ways.
New Standards will arrive this fall in the form of a historic lead sheet book of jazz compositions dedicated entirely to female composers, the Candid Records release featuring an all-star band and exciting line-up of special guests, and a dynamic multi-media exhibition at Detroit’s Carr Center.
