Premiering at 9pm EST tonight, a brand new song from Andrew Bird can be heard during a pivotal moment of HBO Max's Emmy®-winning Max Original drama series, The Pitt. Written with The Pitt composer Gavin Brivik, to soundtrack a crucial scene in season two's sixth episode, "Need Someone" features Bird's lead vocals and whistled melodies, with poignant lyrics asking, "And who will now take care of us in the hills and valleys, the highs and lows? All I know is you need someone. In the by and by, need someone who is gonna cry for you."
Ahead of the episode's premiere, "Need Someone" is out now via Loma Vista Recordings: LISTEN
"I was approached by The Pitt composer Gavin Brivik about writing for this scene," says Andrew Bird. "I really enjoy these projects because the challenge is to respond to the emotion of the scene with melody and lyrics. There's a bit more clarity of purpose to it as opposed to writing for myself. I was thinking of all the hardships the characters have endured, and how if you are an empathetic, good person you can hope that people will be there for you when it's your time to pass on. I suppose it's really about karma. I love how this show champions our healthcare workers and first responders who do what they do for all the right reasons: to help those in need and who are willing to put themselves in harm's way for the greater good. Gavin was a pleasure to work with. All in all – a gratifying experience."
"After I finished watching the episode with The Pitt team and the showrunner, Scott, they gave me an opportunity to write a song for a powerful moment in the season," adds Gavin Brivik. "I immediately started thinking about my dream collaborators. Andrew was at the top of my list, and I felt so lucky that he was interested in working with us. I sent Andrew a sketch of the song and within hours, he sent me back a voice memo of his first pass, which literally brought me and the music editor, Lorena, to tears. It was perfect and he brought so much depth and empathy to the music."
"Need Someone" marks the latest in a long streak of film and TV collaborations for the GRAMMY®-nominated multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, whistler and songwriter, Andrew Bird. In addition to The Pitt, Bird has composed music for movies by Judd Apatow, Lynn Shelton and Chris Pine, FX series Baskets and PBS documentary Storm Lake, while appearing in Disney's The Muppets and making his professional acting debut in FX's Fargo.
Andrew Bird has also released roughly 20 acclaimed albums, headlined concerts at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Red Rocks and festivals around the globe, delivered TED Talks and New York Times op-eds, recently reimagined all of the newly reissued, cult classic Buckingham Nicks LP alongside GRAMMY®-winner Madison Cunningham (Cunningham Bird), and worked with everyone from Fiona Apple to Phoebe Bridgers. He is currently celebrating the 20th Anniversary of The Mysterious Production of Eggs, the era-defining LP that cemented his enigmatic style into the indie music canon, inspired decades of imitation from others, and epitomized the ingenious form of whistling and emotional resonance that still prevails on songs like "Need Someone."
