“…Lacey has emerged as one of the UK’s most distinctive singer-songwriters" – The Guardian

Today, rising UK R&B singer Yazmin Lacey releases her debut album Voice Noteson Own Your Own Records and Believe.  Voice Notes has been featured in NPR’s New Music Friday’s recap of the best albums out this week, a KCRW Top Tuneand more. Yazmin was also just featured as Spotify's EQUAL ambassador in the UK and Ireland for February, which led to her being featured on billboards in London’sLeicester Square and Times Square in NYC.  Yazmin is also headed to North America for performances soon, with dates to be announced.

Written over the course of two years, Voice Notes is executive produced by Dave Okumu (The Invisible, Jessie Ware, Arlo Parks, Ibeyi), and is a beautifully personal account exploring Yazmin’s lived experiences and brings life and color to her own voice notes journaled on her phone. What started as quick notes, ideas and reminders became the inception of lyrics and full songs.

Yazmin explains - “I wrote this album for me… music is the place where I make sense of my feelings, it always has been and ‘Voice Notes’ is no different. It’s a collection of responses to what was going on in my life and the world around me. I wrote this for my own peace of mind… and by track 14 I think I gained some. I hope this record makes people feel good, I want people to feel seen and heard”.

Today, Yazmin also shares her new single “From A Lover,” which follows up previous tracks “Late Night People,” an ode to nightlife, “Bad Company,” an introspective track narrating the relationship between Yazmin and her inner demon, and “Pieces” which Yazmin calls “an open goodbye letter.”

Yazmin Lacey didn’t set out to be a singer. Born and raised in Manor Park, East London, she relocated to Nottingham whilst working for a children's charity and initially only considered making music as a way of having fun with friends. However, a chance encounter led to her earning a place on Future Bubblers - Gilles Peterson’s development programme devoted to discovering and nurturing fresh UK talent - and enthused by the experience, Lacey recorded some songs in her living room, then in 2017 self-released her debut EP, Black Moon. The more polished When The Sun Dips 90 Degrees EP followed in 2018, and then Morning Matters EP in 2020 – the EP’s title track has clocked up over 14 million plays on Spotify and also saw Yazmin make her COLORS debut performing “On Your Own.”
