66 Records (Sixty Six Records aka ‘Double 6 The Label’)
66 Records is a boutique hip hop label formed by friends John Nelson and Abraham Poni and a collective of young African artists; built from the basement studio of their housing projects buildings in Melbourne’s inner-city suburb of Collingwood.
Now with an active roster of half a dozen artists and many more on their radar, 66’s focus has been primarily on putting out urban music by young artists of minority ethnicities. The label has built a grass roots following around Melbourne with its feverish live events, which have gone from local popularity to international notoriety.
Outlets including ABC TV, New York Times, The Age, Alja Zeera TV and more have reported around the publicity that the label garnered after being racially targeted by local law enforcement after one of their shows in Melbourne led to what the press would call “African gang riots” on the streets of Collingwood.
Now, in a joint venture with Warner Music Australia with worldwide rights, Melbourne’s 66 Records are ready to unleash their new material from artists Eco$ystem, Lil Jaye, BBG Smokey and Baby T.
