Biography View

Since 1981, Blue Note Jazz Club has been a cultural institution in New York City and one of the premiere jazz clubs in the world. Blue Note strives to preserve the history of jazz, and the club is a place where progression and innovation - the foundations of jazz - are encouraged and practiced on a nightly basis. In addition to the main acts that feature the likes of Robert Glasper, Pat Metheny, Christain McBride, Joshua Redman, Ron Carter and Chris Botti, Blue Note regularly showcases up-and-coming jazz, soul, hip-hop, R&B and funk artists. After 40 years of success, Blue Note continues to carry the torch for jazz into the 21st century in the cultural heart of New York, Greenwich Village.

Steven Bensusan, President & Owner

Blue Note Entertainment Group

Steven Bensusan joined Blue Note Entertainment Group in 1996 and currently serves as President of the company. Under Steven’s leadership, Blue Note has seen tremendous global growth.

In 2000, Steven facilitated the opening of B.B. King Blues Club, formerly located in Times Square, NY for Blue Note Entertainment Group, applying the jazz club model to a multi-genre venue concept. For 15 years, the venue grew to become New York City's premiere supper club venue, presenting a wide array of celebrated artists including Aretha Franklin, James Brown, John Mayer, Mos Def, Bruce Hornsby, The Roots, Brian Wilson, Sonny Rollins, Isaac Hayes, Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, Jeff Beck, Chuck Berry, Buddy Guy, Pat Benatar, Peter Frampton and, of course, the venue's iconic namesake B.B. King, who continued to perform at the venue until his passing in May of 2015. He has also managed talent booking for the Regattabar Jazz Club at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge since 2004.

Steven then opened Highline Ballroom in 2007, which was a state-of-the-art venue located in the heart of Chelsea which specialized in cutting edge music and eclectic booking, quickly establishing itself as the hottest Manhattan showcase venue for major artists to perform personal sets. Highline hosted marquee artists from Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Carlos Santana to Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Amy Winehouse.

In celebration of the Blue Note's 30th Anniversary in 2011, Blue Note Entertainment Group established the annual Blue Note Jazz Festival, which takes place each June for the entire month in New York (with 150+ shows in more than 15 venues). The festival has since expanded to Tokyo. 2021 marks the 10 year anniversary of this celebrated jazz festival.

In April 2012, Steven led Blue Note Entertainment Group's reopening of the famed Howard Theatre in Washington, D.C. which had been closed for thirty years. The Howard once launched the careers of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye, and The Supremes, among others, and Blue Note Entertainment Group is dedicated to presenting music legends, cultivating new talent and revitalizing the music-loving community of Washington, D.C. and its surrounding areas.

Steven has personally led the openings of four new Blue Note’s within the past years, including Blue Note Hawaii in Waikiki (January 2016), Blue Note Beijing (September 2016), Blue Note Napa (October 2016), and Blue Note Rio (August 2017), with additional global locations in development.

Subsidiaries of Blue Note Entertainment Group include the GRAMMY®-nominated record label Half Note Records, whose catalogue includes over fifty titles recorded live at New York's Blue Note Jazz Club, as well as Blue Note Travel, which sells fans musical experiences in different parts of the world such as Cuba.
