April xx, 2022---The Rock and Roll Playhouse---a family concert series where kids rock out to the classics---announces a national Earth Day Weekend celebration on April 23 & 24. In historic music venues across the country, The Rock and Roll Playhouse will honor Earth Day with music by the Grateful Dead for Kids, a band who famously advocated for the well-being of our planet. The Rock and Roll Playhouse Band will perform the music at all stops, and families can expect jubilant dance parties filled with love, peace, and environmental awareness. A portion of all proceeds will go to the Grateful Dead’s official non-profit, Rex Foundation, which supports charitable organizations working to protect the Earth.
“We’re excited to bring families together across the country to celebrate Earth Day Weekend,” said Stephen Grybowski, Senior Director, The Rock and Roll Playhouse. “The Grateful Dead were not only a phenomenal band with classic songs, but they were environmentally aware-–that’s a connection that makes these shows an even more special celebration for families as we inspire the next generation of young rockers.”
Providing kids with early music exposure and encouraging creativity, The Rock and Roll Playhouse is introducing the next generation to timeless music by artists including The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Phish, David Bowie, Prince, Aretha Franklin, Dave Matthews Band, and more. The Playhouse was founded in 2013 at its flagship venue Brooklyn Bowl by Peter Shapiro, entrepreneur and co-owner of the Bowl and owner of The Capitol Theatre, and Amy Striem, a certified Early Childhood and Elementary teacher. Designed to create opportunities for families to experience live music together in historic venues, The Rock and Roll Playhouse has presented hundreds of unforgettable shows nationwide.

ABOUT THE ROCK AND ROLL PLAYHOUSE
The Rock and Roll Playhouse is the largest national concert series for families where kids can “move, play and sing while listening to works from the classic-rock canon” (NY Times). The Rock and Roll Playhouse was founded in 2014 at its flagship venue, Brooklyn Bowl, by industry pioneer Peter Shapiro, and Amy Striem, a certified Early Childhood and Elementary teacher, who were looking to create opportunities for families to experience live music together in historic music venues. The Rock and Roll Playhouse has since performed to hundreds of thousands of kids and their families in over 42 venues across 30 cities, playing music from the most iconic musicians in history to inspire the next generation of children. Its core audience of kids under 10 explore their creativity dancing to live music from curated local bands, listening to stories and playing interactive activities. The program has donated to the Can’d Aid Foundation’s Tunes Programs, VH1 Save the Music Foundation, and Keep the Music Alive, as well as thousands of ticket donations to local school fundraisers and auctions around the country.
ABOUT REX FOUNDATION
From their earliest days, The Grateful Dead received countless requests for help from community organizations. The band became known for their generosity and their numerous benefit concerts. In 1984, members of the band, with family and friends, established Rex Foundation as a non-profit charitable organization, allowing the band to proactively support creative endeavors in the arts, sciences, and education. Rex identifies those who are out there doing good work, those who might be overlooked, those who are trying to make a difference in their communities, and then provides the funding those people need to carry out their missions.
“We found ourselves in the dilemma of not having the time to do enough benefits for the things that we were interested in supporting or helping or any good cause that presented itself. The people that come to ask their local rock and roll band for help are the forgotten people, believe me. If you have to call the Grateful Dead for assistance, you’re definitely falling between the cracks. It’s a matter of conscience. If you feel like you like to do things that help and that it isn’t particularly difficult to do so, it’s a matter of choices. So that’s why we started the Rex Foundation.” - Jerry Garcia
