Ferris & Sylvester Go There with “Breadwinner,” Exploring the Underside of Creative Intimacy
|
Today (2.11), “one of the best bands in the last five years” (BBC Music) Ferris & Sylvester share “Breadwinner,” the latest track from their forthcoming debut album Superhuman, out March 11 via PIAS. Written - fittingly - in the South London flat they used to share, “Breadwinner” is like eavesdropping on a couple’s intimate and unsparing conversation, its laid-back, soulful vibe belying the raw feelings and resentment that can emerge when two people mix creative, romantic and financial pursuits.
I wanna be your breadwinner
But I’m living off a loan
I wanna be your breadwinner
But all I have is borrowed
We’ve been through hell to get here
But all I really want is a home
To celebrate “Breadwinner” and mark one month from their album release, Ferris & Sylvester will also share their “Live at Lafayette, London” livestream today. Available only to fans who preordered Superhuman, the stream from their November 2021 concert at London’s Lafayette – their favorite show to date – will go live today at 7pm GMT / 2pm ET.
“This song is a celebration of feeling lost. Of not knowing where you’re going or how to get what you want. Of working hard in your work life and your love life, and getting little reward,” says Ferris & Sylvester. “You imagined your life would be like an indie film, where boy meets girl and everyone lives in cool loft apartments. Instead life is more like an unseen episode of Peep Show. The truth is, everyone is in it together. There is an odd human comfort in that and it deserves to be celebrated. That is what Breadwinner is for.”
On March 11th, Ferris & Sylvester will release their debut album Superhuman. Produced by Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, The Strokes) and Michael Rendall (Pink Floyd, Youth), and written over the span of two years across hotel rooms and every nook and cranny of their globetrotting relationship (including their Honda CRV), the 12-track album features 10 brand-new songs. It documents the pair’s creative and personal journey with one another as they escaped to the London countryside, embraced the charm of Cottagecore and discovered a life away from touring, where writing and recording was sandwiched between hiking, knitting and growing their own food. They have already previewed the album’s first two tracks with the rip-roaring title track “Superhuman” and “Golden,” the latter of which they filmed at the London bar they met nearly six years ago.
Hailed for their “immaculate harmonies” and “rich, fully realized sound” (Rolling Stone), Ferris & Sylvester fuse Americana and rock’n’roll sensibilities into an undeniable sound, and have built a name for themselves as one of the emerging artists to watch in the UK. All ahead of their debut record, the duo has won UK's Americana Awards ‘Emerging Artist of Year,’ earned more than 10M streams, garnered musical comparisons to Simon & Garfunkel and First Aid Kit, plus have already shared the stage with Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, George Ezra, Jade Bird and more.
