Karen Elson signs to Big Yellow Dog Music; New music out today (3.25)

Big Yellow Dog Music has signed acclaimed singer-songwriter, author, entrepreneur, advocate, and supermodel Karen Elson to its eclectic artist, label and publishing roster.

Elson co-wrote all the songs on her new album 'GREEN' with its producers Daniel Tashian (a fellow Big Yellow Dog Music writer and artist) and Ian Fitchuk. Tashian and Elson also collaborated on the song "Wild Blue.” See full details below.

Elson and Tashian have become frequent collaborators. The two co-wrote Elson's electric song “Lightning Strikes” with Fitchuk, and they shared a holiday themed performance of their song “Christmas Lights” which was featured on Tashian’s ‘It’s A Snow Globe World’ EP (11.5.21).

Today (3.25), acclaimed singer-songwriter, author, entrepreneur, advocate, and supermodel Karen Elson shares her ethereal new single, “Broken Shadow.” Co-written and co-produced with Nashville heavyweights Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk (the GRAMMY® Award-winning team behind Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour), “Broken Shadow” offers a delectable taste of Elson’s forthcoming studio album, GREEN, out April 29 via Big Yellow Dog Music.

Accompanying “Broken Shadow” is an otherworldly video, directed by Elson and the Nashville-based photographer, Emily Dorio. The sparse yet stunning visual, captured by cinematographer Mike Matinazad (Cage the Elephant, Thomas Rhett, Julia Michaels), allows Elson’s delicate vocals to take center stage. Watch “Broken Shadow” here.

“Broken Shadow” also appears on the official soundtrack for Moonshot, a sci-fi romantic comedy, starring Lana Condor (To All The Boys), Cole Sprouse (Riverdale), and Zach Braff (Garden State, Scrubs, Cheaper by the Dozen). Available today across digital platforms, the Moonshot OST features two additional songs by Elson: “Wild Blue” and “Heaven Shines a Light,” the latter of which is performed by rising singer-songwriter, Cyn. The film arrives March 31 on HBO Max.

Backed by plaintive strumming and a steady beat, “Broken Shadow” is a particularly introspective composition for Elson. “It’s the most autobiographical song. The lyrics poured out of me,” she notes. “‘Broken Shadow’ is about recognizing that we’re all flawed, complicated, and a little bit fucked up and making peace with that. It’s about loving the broken parts of yourself. COVID strangely catapulted me into this frame of deep reflection. I did a lot of work to reconcile places in the past I deemed broken or complicated and showed the shadow back to myself. I’m telling the shadow, ‘You’re my friend and a part of me. Let’s continue’.”

That hopeful sentiment sets the tone for Green, which marks Elson’s third full-length album (following 2010’s The Ghost Who Walks and 2017’s Double Roses). Written and produced alongside Fitchuk (who also collaborated with Elson on her 2020 EP, Radio Redhead, Vol.1) and TashianGREEN finds Elson taking a brighter, sunnier direction with her songwriting.

Ahead of “Broken Shadow,” Elson teased Green with her jubilant first single, “Lighting Strikes,” which soundtracked Moschino’s widely-praised Resort 2022 campaign (aka Moschino: The Musical). Released in the summer of 2021, and directed by Moschinocreative director Jeremy Scott, the ingenious short film stared Elson, as she sang and danced her way through several delightfully-colored, retro-glam sequences. A shorter cut of the film also served as the official “Lightning Strikes” video.
