The Afghan Whigs, The Wailers, Built To Spill, Dumpstaphunk and Spin Doctors Hit Brooklyn Bowl In May

Brooklyn Bowl -- "one of the most incredible places on Earth" according to Rolling Stone -- will welcome reggae legends The Wailers, two of the '90s most influential rock acts The Afghan Whigs and Built to Spill, a pair of NOLA's standout acts Dumpstaphunk and Kermit Ruffins, and NYC's Spin Doctors as part of their May lineup.

The Juan MacLean (DJ Set) - Sat, May 3

DFA Records' "club music maestro" Juan MacLean is releasing his first studio album in almost five years this summer.  The yet untitled album will feature collaborations with LCD Soundsystem's Nancy Whang, who will open the May 3rd Brooklyn Bowl show with a DJ set (shows: 11:30 pm, admission: $10).

The Wailers - Tue, May 13

The Wailers -- the legendary backing band of Bob Marley -- are a reggae institution that, decades after Marley's death, continues to tour the world.  In honor of its 30th anniversary, The Wailers are performing their 'Legend' album -- named the Best Album of the 20th century by Time Magazine -- in its entirety (show: 8:00pm, admission: $15).

The Afghan Whigs - Thu, May 15

The Afghan Whigs released their first album in sixteen years -- 'Do to the Beast' -- via Sub Pop this month, and the LA Times called them "masters of the form" when they headlined Coachella.   The band kicks off their 'Do to the Beast' tour at Brooklyn Bowl. (shows: 8pm, admission: $40).

Dumpstaphunk / Spin Doctors - Fri, May 16

Dumpstaphunk, called the "best funk band from New Orleans" by The New York Times, was formed by keyboardist Ivan Neville in 2003 after a four year stint in the Spin Doctors.  Neville played on the platinum-selling New York group's 1999 album 'Here Comes The Bride.'  The bands share a rare double bill at Brooklyn Bowl on May 16th (shows: 7:30pm, admission: $20).

Built To Spill - Mon, May 19

Doug Martsch's Built To Spill -- one of the most popular indie rock bands of the '90s -- are cited by artists like The Strokes, Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie as a significant musical influence. Called "indie-rock's version of Crazy Horse" (Rolling Stone), the seminal group's Brooklyn Bowl stop is part of a string of shows en route to the Boston Calling Music Festival (show: 8pm, admission: $25).

    
Reigning Sound - Thu, May 22

Drawing "from soul, country and garage-punk in [their] tightly coiled songs" (NPR), the Memphis-formed rock outfit Reigning Sound are far more complex than many of their garage-dwelling counterparts.  The now Asheville, NC-based band recorded their forthcoming LP, 'Shattered' (7.15, Merge) at Daptone's Brooklyn studio (show: 8pm, admission: $13 - $15).

    
Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers - Sat, May 31

A founding member of the Rebirth Brass Band, trumpeter Kermit Ruffins has been a part of the vibrant New Orleans jazz scene for more than three decades and has released more than a dozen records as a solo artist.  The "unabashed entertainer" (New York Times) will perform backed by his Barbecue Swingers and Jonathon Boogie Long will open the show (show: 8pm, admission: $15).
