The Rock And Roll Playhouse Celebrates Father’s Day Weekend

With Music Of The Grateful Dead For Kids

PORTION OF PROCEEDS TO SUPPORT REX FOUNDATION

Tuesday, June 6 - The Rock and Roll Playhouse, a family concert series where kids and parents rock out to the classics, just announced a special run of shows on Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18 over Father’s Day Weekend benefiting Rex Foundation, A non-profit organization created by the Grateful Dead family and friends in 1983. Featuring the music of the Grateful Dead for Kids, The Rock and Roll Playhouse will bring family fun concerts to 24 different venues across the country, culminating in one of their largest weekend of shows to date! Tickets are available here.

Following their Mother’s Day weekend shows featuring music of The Beatles, Taylor Swift and Shania TwainWHYY (PBS / NPR) shared “Spending Mother’s Day with the folks who made you a mom already seems like a great idea, but adding classic music so your kids can grow to appreciate it means you’ve won the parenting prize.” Let’s keep it going for Father’s Day!

Senior Director of The Rock and Roll Playhouse, Stephen Grybowski shares “Live music is the heartbeat of the human soul. It's truly one of the few things on earth that can unite any two people from any two walks of life, anywhere in the world. To be able to help parents share the music that they love with their children and the next generation is the best part of what I do.” When asked who has more fun, the kids or the parents? “It's really hard to compare! Children are experiencing this music often for the first time in their lives, so the beauty of that is pretty unrivaled. At the same time, it means so much to a parent to share the music that they grew up with and love so deeply with their children.”

From The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Phish, Dolly Parton, David Bowie, Prince, Aretha Franklin, Harry Styles, Beyoncé, Dave Matthews Band and more, The Rock and Roll Playhouse introduces the next generation to timeless music while providing kids with early music exposure and encouraging creativity. The Playhouse was founded in 2013 at its flagship venue Brooklyn Bowl by Peter Shapiro, entrepreneur and co-owner of the Bowl and owner of The Capitol Theatre, and Amy Striem, a certified Early Childhood and Elementary teacher. Designed to create opportunities for families to experience live music together in historic venues, The Rock and Roll Playhouse continues to unite families through music with hundreds of unforgettable shows nationwide as the largest national concert series for families where kids can “move, play and sing while listening to works from the classic-rock canon” (New York Times).

ABOUT THE ROCK AND ROLL PLAYHOUSE

The Rock and Roll Playhouse is the largest national concert series for families where kids can “move, play and sing while listening to works from the classic-rock canon” (New York Times). The Rock and Roll Playhouse was founded in 2014 at its flagship venue, Brooklyn Bowl, by industry pioneer Peter Shapiro, and Amy Striem, a certified Early Childhood and Elementary teacher, who were looking to create opportunities for families to experience live music together in historic music venues. The Rock and Roll Playhouse has since performed to hundreds of thousands of kids and their families in over 42 venues across 30 cities, playing music from the most iconic musicians in history to inspire the next generation of children. Its core audience of kids under 10 explore their creativity dancing to live music from curated local bands, listening to stories and playing interactive activities. The program has raised funds for the Can’d Aid Foundation’s Tunes Programs, VH1 Save the Music Foundation, The Rex Foundation, UNICEF, and Keep the Music Alive, as well as thousands of ticket donations to local school fundraisers and charity auctions around the country.

ABOUT REX FOUNDATION

The Rex Foundation aims to help secure a healthy environment, promote individuality in the arts, provide support to critical and necessary social services, assist others less fortunate than ourselves, protect the rights of indigenous people and ensure their cultural survival, build a stronger community, and educate children and adults everywhere. From their earliest days, the Grateful Dead received countless requests for help from community organizations, and became known for their generosity and their numerous benefit concerts. In the fall of 1983, members of the band, with family and friends, established the Rex Foundation - named after Rex Jackson, a Grateful Dead roadie and later road manager until his untimely death in 1976 - as a non-profit charitable organization, allowing the band to proactively support creative endeavors in the arts, sciences, and education. The band played the first of many Rex Foundation benefit concerts in the spring of 1984. Following Grateful Dead lead guitarist Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995 and the subsequent dissolution of the band, the Rex Foundation has continued to make grants funded by the very elements that hold our community together: music, connection, fun, creativity and community spirit. Since 1984 the Rex Foundation has granted $9 million to over 1,300 recipients.
