Two Feet -- the platinum-selling singer, songwriter and producer who also is known as the “king of sex playlists” (PAPER Magazine) -- generated an astonishing $1 million last Sunday during a groundbreaking auction of limited-edition works of digital art using what are known as non-fungible tokens, or NFTs.
The Valentine’s Day event, launched in partnership with Las Vegas-based pop-surrealist crypto artist FEWOCiOUS, was organized and supported by Los Angeles-based digital artist collective Illumino. The event marked the third time ever that an NFT drop surpassed $1 million, in what Cointelegraph described as “innovative” and what fans and digital art lovers apparently couldn’t get enough of.
NFTs are a non-interchangeable form of cryptocurrency that represent unique entities that are difficult, if not impossible, to counterfeit and which are traded and sold using blockchain technology. Two Feet is one of a select few trailblazers in the music industry who has begun using NFTs as a way to monetize their art, leading the way in showing other creators how such cutting-edge technology can offer huge benefits in terms of protecting intellectual property.
In a recent report, Rolling Stone noted about the trend that “NFTs are already starting to become more popular amongst artists,” citing notable performers like Deadmau5, Portugal The Man and RAC as other early adopters of the technology.
By using this increasingly popular form of crypto, Two Feet and FEWOCiOUS hope to highlight how creative personalities can harness the power of cutting-edge tools to engage with fans -- and in turn earn money -- at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has shuttered concerts and galleries. This release marks one of the first collaborations of its kind for the music industry.
“This is a whole new world where possibilities are endless, and I think it captures the essence of where art is headed in the 21st century, from the canvas to the blockchain,” says Two Feet. “I’m so excited to be one of the first in this space and break down barriers for future musicians to start doing this too.”
The Valentine’s Day even saw auctioned off pieces that included a digital rendition of a human hand, titled “Crowded City,” as well as a 3D rendering of a human head, called “A Peak In My Head.” It also featured a hand-drawn animation called “City Hand,” along with Two Feet and FEWOCiOUS auctioning a 3D guitar, titled “CryptoCaster,” and an accompanying physical guitar that was raffled off live.
The auction took place on Nifty Gateway, an exchange for buying and selling NFTs that is powered by the Ethereum blockchain.
Two Feet’s foray into crypto comes on the heels of his recent single “Think I’m Crazy,” which recently broke the top 25 at Alternative Radio. Watch the official video for “Think I’m Crazy” here.
