Asaf Avidan/ ‘Anagnorisis’/ Telmavar Records

After earning Platinum records and #1 hits across Europe over the past decade, Asaf Avidan had planned to take some time to regroup in the rural Italian countryside this year, taking stock of life and planning out his next musical directions. Of course, those plans changed as the coronavirus pandemic swept across the Israeli musician's chosen retreat, and Asaf felt no choice but to tap into the complex, inherently chaotic and ever-changing nature of what it means to live in our current moment. The result is Anagnorisis (September 11 / Telmavar Records), a ten-song collection named after the Greek literary device in which a character experiences a sudden and complete moment of revelation. In this case, Asaf's revelation was that nothing is truly that simple or that easy.

On September 18, Bright Light Bright Light (the performance alias of Welsh international pop star Rod Thomas) will open the gates to ‘Fun City’, his meticulously crafted collection of 80s-inspired disco-pop that he built as a statement of perseverance during restless times. To be released on his own label YSKWN! (in partnership with Megaforce Records and The Orchard) and to include collaborations with a yet-to-be-announced “who’s who” of LGBTQ+ icons and musical trailblazers, ‘Fun City’ is his love letter to marginalized communities who feel scared or forgotten.

Handsome Ghost/ Some Still Morning/ Photo Finish Records

Massachusetts duo Handsome Ghost (Tim Noyes & Eddie Byun) make an evolved return to their roots as they announce their new album ‘Some Still Morning’ (out May 15 on Photo Finish Records).

‘Some Still Morning’ is an album that serves as an elevated return to the folk-inspired songwriting that has always been the heart of Handsome Ghost. It’s an album that pairs its melancholy with an appreciative acceptance and peacefulness, acknowledging that you cannot have light without dark. Songs like “Weeds” and “Fifteen Countries” are delicately sung along a strumming guitar like an intimate fireside reflection on getting older & growing up, yet still looking back on the people and things that have made us who we are. Elsewhere, piano takes center stage on tracks like “Christmas In Jersey” and “Weeknight Crowd” matching the haunting nature of the album’s production and Noyes’ earnest vocals which can sometimes feel like a whispered secret.

Native Harrow / ‘Closeness’ / Loose

Native Harrow - the Pennsylvania duo of Devin Tuel and Stephen Harms with “twilight twang and vintage vibes” (Rolling Stone) - announce their new album Closeness, out September 4 on Loose. Featuring ten new, original songs written and produced by the band, Closeness is a reflection on time’s inexorable churn and the fragility of life, a stirring collection that imbues impeccably crafted Laurel Canyon folk, baroque pop, and rootsy psychedelia with radical empathy and open-hearted solidarity. The album was recorded at Reliable Recorders in Chicago, and engineered by Alex Hall (Neko Case, JD McPherson).

The Ries Brothers/ ‘Paint Your Emotion’/ Megaforce Records
